BottomLine Communications reports Star publisher Mi-Ai Parrish informed the staff today that seven positions will be cut, in addition to one-week furloughs for most employees. She said the company had a decent fourth quarter, but the recovery the Star’s parent company, McClatchy, hoped for wasn’t apparent yet. McClatchy’s earnings fell 5 percent last quarter.
“Job eliminations and furloughs are difficult and disruptive, and it’s not a step I take lightly,” she wrote in a memo. “I understand the weariness that many of you feel with this news.”
Hearne Christopher writes that staffers are in shock.
UPDATE: One comment on the BLC story says the memo is a hoax. Can anyone confirm this?
