Kansas City was well represented over the weekend at the Society of Professional Journalists’ Region 7 conference in Ames, Iowa. Attending the event were Press Club board members Debra DeCoster, Linda Chesney Kaut, Steve Kaut, Dick Nelson, Linda Friedel, and myself. Also in attendance were Press Club members Beth Lipoff (freelancer) and Shaun Hittle (Lawrence Journal-World).
In addition to networking with other SPJ members from the region, which includes Kansas, Missouri, Iowa and Nebraska, the group sat in on sessions focusing on topics such as document-driven reporting, reporting for mobile devices, multimedia reporting and how to find sources with social media.
Kansas City area universities also did well in the regional Mark of Excellence Awards.
Johnson County Community College won nine awards, including best radio feature reporting and best all-around non-daily newspaper (second place)
KU won six awards. K-State won two awards, and Baker University won four awards.
