KC Star, LJWorld named IRE finalists

The Kansas City Star and Lawrence Journal-World were named finalists in the Investigative Reporters & Editors awards competition, announced yesterday.

The Star’s series “Many Bullets, Little Blame,” by reporters Christine Vendel and Donna McGuire, which chronicled the inability of the Kansas City Police Department to prosecute shootings due to the “no-snitch” culture, was named a finalist for the IRE medal, which honors the top investigative journalism in the country.

The Journal-World’s package, “Decades of Dishonor,” which looked at Boy Scout leaders in Kansas who were tied to the organization’s “perversion files,” was named a finalist in the investigations triggered by breaking news category. Reporter Shaun Hittle and photographer Mike Yoder were among the staffers honored.
