KSHB wins prestigious duPont Award for coverage of JJ’s explosion

KSHB is one of 14 recipients of the Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Awards, given for excellence in broadcast, digital and documentary journalism. The NBC affiliate’s work covering the deadly explosion at JJ’s restaurant won recognition.

Reporters Ryan Kath, Keith King and Melissa Yeager, executive producer Melissa Greenstein and photographers Michael Butler and Andy Pollard were honored.

The team broke major developments of the ongoing story: the lack of an approved city permit for the contractor, the official cause of the explosion, changes to the fire department’s natural gas policy, and the first lawsuits filed by restaurant employees and by the family of the woman killed in the explosion. The aggressive, thorough coverage included exclusive coverage and culminated with a sophisticated in depth hour-long primetime special.
