John Eligon is the New York Times’ new KC correspondent

When A.G. Sulzberger, heir to the New York Times throne, was recalled to the Big Apple in March, the Times said it would be filling the position. John Eligon, who most recently covered the New York legislature and was previously a city reporter for the Times, started his new assignment in Kansas City July 5.

Prior to covering Albany, Eligon was a courts reporter for the Times. He also covered the NBA’s New Jersey Nets until moving to the metro desk.Though Sulzberger’s title was Kansas City bureau chief, Eligon, a Northwestern graduate, refers to his new gig as Kansas City correspondent. In a one-man bureau, though, who cares about titles?

Kansas City welcomed Eligon with a nasty hot snap, the subject of his first KC-datelined story.
