Former LJWorld editor Bill Mayer dies
Bill Mayer, who worked for the Lawrence Journal-World from 1950 to 2010, died Thursday. He was 88.
Mayer, a navigator on a World War II Army bomber, served in numerous capacities at the Journal-World, including managing editor and executive editor. He wrote a sports column published in the paper for 60 years, until his formal retirement in 2010. Continue reading
LJWorld prints same-sex wedding, engagement announcements
Lawrence might be the most liberal burg in Kansas, but the newspaper was resistant to publishing same-sex couples announcements. Until Saturday, that is, when the Journal-World published a wedding announcement and an engagement announcement.
KC Star to print Lawrence Journal-World
The Lawrence Journal-World, which has owned its own printing press for 122 years, will move production to the Kansas City Star, the paper announced today.
The move, which executives called “painful,” will eliminate 33 jobs. The new printing agreement will begin in January. Continue reading
Mark Potts out at LJWorld
Mark Potts, an industry veteran who was hired to lead editorial efforts the Lawrence Journal-World and its eight community weeklies, just over a year ago, has resigned.
Potts, the company’s vice president of content, “has been offered the opportunity to consult with the company in the near term; however, that consulting work would be conducted outside of the office,” according to a memo from World Company general manager Scott Stanford sent to staffers yesterday afternoon. KC Star sees circulation boost
After seeing a giant drop in circulation in the last September’s Alliance for Audited Media report (formerly Audit Bureau of Circulation), the Kansas City Star saw some small gains in the report issued Monday.
Sunday circulation is up 2 percent from 275,784 to 280,790, a jump of 5,006 from a report issued last September. Continue reading
